Historic Pittsburgh Building Damaged By Fire

Firefighters were called to the scene of a massive fire at a historic Pittsburgh building on Friday.

WILMERDING, PA — The historic former Westinghouse Castle, which now houses an art school, caught on fire Friday afternoon. While the blaze grew to four alarms, it's unclear precisely how much damage the building suffered.

The Westinghouse Arts Academy located in the castle issued a statement on social media saying that the fire began on an unoccupied floor and the building was safely evacuated. Firefighters arrived on the scene at about 1:30 p.m.

No injuries were reported.

There was no immediate word on how the fire started.

The building is on the National Register of Historic Places. Built in 1890, it once served as the headquarters for Pittsburgh entrepreneur George Washington and was home to the Westinghouse Air Brake General Office.

The Westinghouse Arts Academy is a public charter school for grades 9 through 12. It offers instruction in dance, digital arts, instrumental, literary arts, musical theater, studio arts, theater arts and vocal music.

The academy has been in the castle since 2021.
