KDKA's Marty Griffin Battling Cancer

The talk show host detailed his condition to listeners Monday.

PITTSBURGH, PA - KDKA-AM talk show host Marty Griffin disclosed Monday that he is battling cancer. Griffin revealed he has squamous cell carcinoma of the throat triggered by the HPV virus.

Griffin said he went public with his medical condition to promote the vaccine teens can get that can prevent the virus. The vaccine was unavailable when he was a youth.

“The reason why I’m telling this story today, and will continue to stream it live on Sparkt.com every single day of this journey, is that I want you to watch the difficulties, the miracles of science the compassionate treatment,” he said. “I want you to look, listen and learn what may happen when you don’t get this vaccine.”

Griffin said he would begin chemotherapy and radiation treatments beginning Tuesday.

Griffin, 59, a longtime KDKA-TV reporter, left the station at the end of July to join the start-up company Sparkt. Its website says Sparket is a "next generation social media company where good stories point to good deeds."
