PITTSBURGH, PA - Sure, there will be picnics and pool parties galore this Memorial Day weekend as summer kicks off unofficially. But there are plenty of other activities to keep you busy this holiday weekend as well.

If you’re looking for an event specifically themed around Memorial Day in Pittsburgh, Patch already covered that. There’s no shortage of them. If you’re looking for an event specifically themed around ribs, Kennywood is the place to be.

The amusement park’s inaugural Ribs & Blues Festival features tasty food and soulful tunes.
Along with Kennywood food favorite The Swhinery, Jim's Smokin' Que, Rogue BBQ, Two Brothers BBQ, PGH Smokehouse and Twelve Whiskey BBQ will be on hand. While you’re dining, kick back and digest to the tunes of The Woods Family, Jill West & Blues Attack, The Fabulous Booze Brothers, Billy & the Regulators, and Jimbo & the Soupbones.

The Tony Award-winning Broadway musical from the creators of “The Sound of Music,” and “South Pacific” delights audiences with its contemporary take on the classic tale.   • Sandcastle Opening Weekend, May 26-28, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The West Homestead water park returns for another season. Set along the Monongahela River, the park features 15 waterslide attractions, a wave pool, the scenic mushroom pool, a lazy river, and two children’s area – all located along a boardwalk. A new eatery, Corn Dogs, opens along the boardwalk this year. We’ll let you guess what popular menu item is featured there.

What better way to spend a summer day or evening than at the ballyard? We’ll remind you that the Pirates are playing competitively in a season in which most people thought they would be out of contention right now. This weekend, they host two division rivals and are offering the following promotions: Free Shirt Friday on, appropriately enough, Friday, Camo Bucket Hat Day on Saturday and Kids Camo Socks Day on Sunday.

  • Memorial Day Weekend Sidewalk Sale, May 25-28 Grove City Premium Outlets, Grove City

Many of the center’s top retailers will afford shoppers four days of specials beyond everyday savings of 25 percent to 65 percent. Additionally, shoppers can enjoy all the summer fun Grove City Premium Outlets has to offer with a bungee jump located just outside of the food court; drinks and treats from Seiver’s Fresh Lemonade stands; and the Snowman, which will be located near the Old Navy Outlet offering YETI's, ice cream and shaved ice treats.
