Kennywood's Steel Curtain: First Look At New Coaster's Vehicles

See here what the new coasters cars will look like when the ride opens next year.

PITTSBURGH, PA - On a coaster that will pay homage to the Steelers, it should come as no surprise that the vehicles on Kennywood’s Steel Curtain also will be Black-and-Gold themed.
The West Mifflin amusement park and the S&S Worldwide Inc., which designed the coaster slated to debut next year, revealed the design of the coaster cars Tuesday at the International Association of Amusement Park and Attractions International Expo.

The vehicles feature the Steelers colors as well as the number 33, a tribute to the year (1933) that the franchise was founded. The seats are shaped to look like footballs with the laces facing outward. There are no shoulder restrains, just lap bars to hold riders in place.

“You can definitely tell you’re in Steelers Country when you board this vehicle,” Kennywood general manager Jerome Gibas said in a statement “With the Steel Curtain setting the North American record for most inversions, it was critical that the trains offer riders a safe and comfortable experience that has them eager to ride again and again.”

“We all know how passionate Steelers fans are,” S&S worldwide director of sales Pete Barto said. “It is our mission to make sure the Steel Curtain vehicle and ride experience lives up to its legendary namesake.”

Rising on the site of the former Log Jammer ride, the Steel Curtain will have a record-breaking nine inversions, the most in the Western Hemisphere, and reach a maximum height of 220 feet. The steel for the track recently was delivered to Kennywood, which plans to open the coaster sometime during the 2019 season.
