Kennywood's Steel Curtain Will Be Closed In 2024, Park Says

Park officials said in a statement the roller coaster will close for modifications to "increase ride reliability and longevity."

WEST MIFFLIN, PA — The Steel Curtain roller coaster at Kennywood will be closed for the 2024 season, park officials announced Wednesday.

According to a statement posted on the park's website, the 220-foot-tall coaster will close to "undergo an extensive modification project."

"To increase ride reliability and longevity, the Steel Curtain will undergo an extensive modification project this year," the statement read. "The park has worked with third-party engineers and the ride’s manufacturer to determine a long-term solution that will allow the ride to run without interruption."

The Steel Curtain, which opened in 2019, was named after the heralded Pittsburgh Steelers defenses of the 1970s and anchors Kennywood's Steelers Country area. The ride is surrounded by attractions and games inspired by the football team.

The ride reaches a top speed of 75 mph on 4,000 feet of track. When it opened, it won the Golden Ticket Award for best new rollercoaster.
