Kevin Stallings Out As Pitt Basketball Coach

Under Stallings, the Panthers had one of their worst two-year runs ever.

PITTSBURGH, PA - Following one of the worst seasons in team history, the University of Pittsburgh has fired basketball coach Kevin Stallings.

"I want to express my appreciation to Coach Stallings for his commitment to our program," Pitt athletic director Heather Lyke said in announcing the change Thursday. "In moving forward, we have tremendous
expectations for our men's basketball program at Pitt and I believe we can achieve great things within the Atlantic Coast Conference and nationally. A national search for the next Pitt head coach will begin
immediately."

Stallings led the Panthers to an 8-24 record in a season in which the team failed to win a single Atlantic Coast Conference game. In the 2016-17 season, the Panthers went 16-17 and had a 4-14 mark in the ACC.

Stallings, the former coach at Vanderbilt, was hired by former athletic director Scott Barnes in 2016 and signed a six-year deal to replace Jamie Dixon, who departed for TCU. His overall record with Pitt was 24-41, with a 5-34 conference record.

Plummeting attendance at the Petersen Events Center this season likely played a role in the decision to fire Stallings. The Panthers’ average attendance was just 4,117, a decrease from 8,327 in the 2016-17 - and that average was a record low for the Panthers in the Pete, Cardiac Hill reported.
