Kimmel Architecture Announces New Name, Satellite Office, Focus on Seniors Housing
Strategic Expansion Targets Critical Seniors Housing Needs Across Western Pennsylvania
[Pittsburgh, PA] - Kimmel Architecture, formerly Kimmel Bogrette Architecture + Site of Philadelphia, formally announces its new name, plus the opening of a new office in Pittsburgh, PA. The strategic expansion reinforces Kimmel’s commitment to delivering client-focused, community-driven design across Western Pennsylvania, the greater Pittsburgh region, Western NY, West Virginia and Ohio.
Kimmel Architecture is already highly active throughout Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania, working with numerous education and municipal clients including the University of Pittsburgh, Washington & Jefferson College, South Fayette Township, and Saint Vincent College, among others. The firm is now bringing the same focus and expertise to the area’s senior living market.
According to Martin Kimmel, founding principal, the Pittsburgh seniors housing market is facing high demand with tight supply. Allegheny County alone has the second-highest concentration of seniors, people over age 65, in the United States. In rural Pennsylvania, seniors represent 21% of the population. By 2050, that number is expected to reach 25%. While Pittsburgh is Pennsylvania’s second most populous city, about 90 percent of Allegheny County is rural. According to The Center for Rural Pennsylvania, the housing shortage for seniors is undeniable.

Due in part to the COVID pandemic, new construction on seniors housing in Western Pennsylvania has been slow to keep up with demand, especially in rural areas. In 2022, about half of seniors in rural Pennsylvania lived in homes that were built earlier than 1970.
For seniors, this can be a safety concern to live in homes that have not been updated to current safety codes. Without a senior living community to call home, many seniors in rural Pennsylvania live alone, not always the best option.

“Our mission to deliver “Extraordinary Solutions for Ordinary Budgets” has been met with enthusiastic response throughout the region, so there is no better time to fully commit to our clients here than by opening the Pittsburgh office and hiring local talent,” stated Kimmel. “This moment represents the culmination of years of hard work, determination, and a belief in what architecture can do when it’s grounded in Mission. By bringing thoughtful, affordable design solutions to the region, we can create housing that supports aging in place and strengthens communities across both urban and rural areas.”
