Longtime Pittsburgh Sandwich Shop Shuts Down

PITTSBURGH, PA — And then there were two.

Peppi's Old Thyme Sandwich Shop once had four locations in Pittsburgh. But with the recent closing of its eatery on Penn Avenue in Point Breeze there are only a pair of Peppi's remaining - on Penn Avenue in the Strip District and on Western Avenue in the North Side.

A Downtown location on Smithfield Street just off of the Smithfield Street Bridge was a casualty of the pandemic.

Housed in a former diner, the Point Breeze Peppi's location had been around for about 20 years.

According to its website, the Peppi's chain began in 1983.

Offering a wide array of specialty subs, Peppi's perhaps is best known for its #7, more commonly known as the Roethlis"burger." The tribute to retired Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is a mammoth, artery clogging sub consisting of ground beef, pork sausage, lettuce, onion, tomato, fried egg, and American cheese.
