Longtime Pittsburgh TV News Anchor Leaves Station

A veteran newscaster has abruptly left the anchor chair.

PITTSBURGH, PA — An era has ended at WTAE-TV. After 21 years, the station has parted way with morning news anchor Kelly Frey.

WTAE issued a statement Wednesday confirming that Frey is leaving following discussions over a new contract. Frey has not addressed her departure on social media.

It's unknown if WTAE will replace Frey with an internal candidate or an outside hire for the morning newscast.

A native of West Chester, PA, Frey is a University of Pittsburgh graduate. She worked at stations in Louisiana and Arkansas before landing at WTAE.

Frey's public struggle with breast cancer led to her being named Pittsburgh Magazine's "Pittsburgher of the Year" in 2017.
