BOSTON, MA — Bill Belichick, who in tandem with quarterback Tom Brady prevented the Steelers from reaching three Super Bowls, is out as the coach of the New England Patriots after 24 years.

Multiple media outlets reported the news on Thursday.

Belichick, 71, and the Patriots defeated the Steelers in three AFC championship games during his tenure. The Patriots crushed the Steelers 36-17 in 2017 and 41-27 in 2005, as well as winning 24-17 in 2002.

The Steelers and Patriots are tied for the most Super Bowl victories, with each winning six. No other team has won six.

With Belichick's reported departure, the longest-tenured NFL coach now is the Steelers' Mike Tomlin. He has coached the team for 17 seasons.

The Steelers play the Buffalo Bills Sunday in the wild card playoffs.
