Major Pittsburgh Road Lane Shift To Occur This Week

An ongoing road project will force a significant lane shift for months on a major Pittsburgh artery. Get the details here.

PITTSBURGH, PA — Drivers in Pleasant Hills and Jefferson Hills will see a new traffic pattern on Route 51 beginning Friday as PennDOT starts the next phase of work on Clairton Boulevard.

PennDOT District 11 announced on Wednesday that traffic crossover preparation work is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. on Friday between East Bruceton Street and Mall Drive in Allegheny County.

Under this phase, northbound Route 51 traffic will be crossed over into the southbound lanes around the clock through late August as roadway reconstruction continues. PennDOT said a single lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained in the southbound lanes. In the crossover section, all traffic will only be able to turn left at signalized intersections.

PennDOT said the crossover is expected to be fully in place by 5 a.m. on June 1, but it could be implemented earlier if the preparation work is completed sooner. The agency also said up to one-mile-long single-lane restrictions will occur in each direction, limiting left-turn movements except at signalized intersections. Posted detours will direct drivers for left-turn movements.

The work is part of a $19.85 million project on Clairton Boulevard. According to PennDOT, the project includes milling and resurfacing, concrete replacement, drainage work, guide rail improvements, ADA curb ramp updates, PRT bus stop improvements, signing and pavement marking installation, and other miscellaneous construction activities.

The project also includes bridge preservation work on three structures, including two structures over Lewis Run and one structure over Lebanon Church Road. PennDOT said an adaptive traffic signal project is also part of the overall job.

That work will provide upgrades to 24 intersections, including full signal replacement at nine intersections, from Peters Creek Road in Jefferson Hills Borough to Stewart Avenue in the City of Pittsburgh.

The Route 51 project is expected to continue for several years. PennDOT said the overall work is anticipated to conclude in 2028.
