Man Dies After Being Shot By Pittsburgh-Area Police Officer

Here are the details on a fatal police shooting in the Pittsburgh area on Tuesday.

PITTSBURGH, PA — A confrontation between a man wielding a gun and a Pittsburgh-area police officer proved deadly on Tuesday.

Allegheny County Police said county 911 was alerted to an officer-involved shooting at 4:21 near the intersection of Swissvale and Ross avenues in Wilkinsburg.

Preliminary information indicates a Wilkinsburg police officer was patrolling the area when he encountered a man with a gun in the 1000 block of Ross Avenue. According to witnesses, the man approached the police vehicle armed with the gun.

The officer involved made numerous commands for the man to drop the weapon. The officer then opened fire a short time later, striking the man in the chest.

The man was taken to an area hospital in critical condition. He later died there.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office is expected to release the identity of the man on Wednesday.
