Man Fatally Attacked In Allegheny County Jail

A man being housed in the Allegheny County Jail died Wednesday after being assaulted by other inmates, police said.

PITTSBURGH, PA — Allegheny County Police and Allegheny County Jail officials are investigating the death of an incarcerated man at the county jail.

The family of the 44-year-old man has been notified of his death, police said. It's currently unclear how he died.

Preliminary information shows at 12:48 p.m. multiple incarcerated individuals entered the man's cell and assaulted him. He was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

According to police, everyone involved in the incident is accounted for and the investigation is ongoing.

It's unknown what charges the man was facing while being incarcerated.

As is practice, an internal review by jail officials will also be conducted. The man's cause and manner of death will be released by the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office.
