PENNSYLVANIA — Five days after his humbling defeat in the Pennsylvania gubernatorial race, state Sen. Doug Mastriano finally conceded.

Mastriano, a far-right Republican endorsed by former President Donald Trump, finally acknowledged his loss to Democratic Governor-elect Josh Shapiro via social media.

"Difficult to accept as the results are, there is no right course but to concede," Mastriano stated. "Josh Shapiro will be our next Governor, and I ask everyone to give him the opportunity to lead and pray that he leads well."

Shapiro had 2,985,433 votes to Mastriano's 2,224,406. The results are unofficial until verified by each of the state's 67 county election departments.

The loss by Mastriano, who participated in the Capitol insurrection in January 2021, was not unanticipated.

Shapiro, the state attorney general had a substantial, fundraising edge and held decisive edges in nearly every poll. Mastriano, of Franklin County, trumpeted an anti-abortion stance, termed the concept of global warming "fake science," and hinted at decertifying every election machine in the state if elected.

Despite his overwhelming defeat, the letterhead on the statement in which Mastriano's concession was posted had the word "governor" under his name.
