Meet Pizza Penny, PNC Park's Newest Racing Pierogi

New piergoi unveiled along with new stadium upgrades and food and beverage options.

A new costumed giant piergoi will race around the field at PNC Park this baseball season.

The Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday introduced Pizza Penny as the latest contestant in the 280-yard Great Pierogi Race that takes place during the fifth inning of all home games. She’ll join a roster that includes Potato Pete, Jalapeno Hannah, Cheese Chester, Sauerkraut Saul, Oliver Onion and Bacon Burt.

Pizza Penny was unveiled along with new PNC food and drink options as the Pirates previewed the upcoming season. The Bucs open the season on April 3 against the Boston Red Sox; the home opener occurs April 7 against the Atlanta Braves.

Among those options are The Market, which will offer grab and go foods such as fresh salads and sandwiches from new carving stations; and the Miller Light Crow’s Nest, a new bar area in the right field plaza.

Team officials also detailed stadium upgrades made during the off-season. They include a new LED out of town score videoboard in right field, new LED lights in PNC Park’s seven light towers and an extension of protective netting to the far end of each dugout.
