New Shadyside Apartment, Grocery And Retail Complex Plans Advance
Dubbed the Meridian, the huge project will replace a much smaller urban shopping center.

PITTSBURGH, PA — New details have been released for a planned massive new apartment, retail and grocery store complex in Shadyside. Echo Realty, an affiliate of the Giant Eagle grocery chain, provided details Tuesday to the city planning commission.
Located at the intersection of Shakespeare Street and Penn Avenue, the project will replace a shopping center anchored by a Giant Eagle. The center currently is being razed.
According to documents Echo provided the the planning commission, its replacement will consist of:

- A 231-unit, five-story tall apartment complex to be called the Meridian. Tenants will be able to park in a rear parking garage.
- A 36,000 square-foot Giant Eagle Market District supermarket. Customers will be able to park in a rear parking garage.
- Ten retail spaces ranging in size from 3,000 to 5,600 square feet.
A construction timeline was not immediately available.
