North Hills Student Wins PA VFW Scout of the Year

A North Hills Senior High School student and member of Girl Scout Troop 50146 has been selected as the 2020 Veterans of Foreign Wars Department of Pennsylvania Scout of the Year.

Hannah Sciulli, a Girl Scout Ambassador Gold Award winner, earned the top VFW honor this year from competition around the Commonwealth. In addition to a trophy, she will also receive $1,000 from the VFW Department of Pennsylvania. Her sponsoring organization, VFW Post 914 ‘Intrepid’ West Mifflin, will also be presenting a monetary award.

Sciulli will be awarded her honors by VFW District 29 Commander Jessica King 7 p.m. at the Thompson Run Athletic Association on Ball Avenue, West Mifflin, Sept. 24. As required, COVID-19 protocol and guidance will be followed.

“As a mother and a veteran who is active in volunteering and helping others, I was very pleased with Hannah’s selection by the state VFW,” said King, a Marine and Iraq War veteran. “Her spirit of giving back to her community is a large part of what the VFW is about.”

Active in scouting since 2011, Sciulli will graduate next year from North Hills Senior High School. She is a student representative for the North Hills School Board, as well as a standout athlete on the school’s golf team. She also volunteers her time with North Hills Senior High School’s Environmental Club and Hands for Service organization.

A member of the National Honor Society, Sciulli intends on majoring in aerospace engineering for her post-secondary studies. She is the daughter of Mario Sciulli, an employee of the United States Postal Service, and Renee Catanzaro. Her sister, Veronica Sciulli, has also distinguished herself in scouting.
