Noted Pittsburgh Music Educator, Band Leader, Lawyer Dies

A well-known Pittsburgh figure who mastered vocations in education, music and law has passed away.

PITTSBURGH, PA — Alan Skwarla's diverse interests made him a well-known figure both in Pittsburgh's legal, music and educational communities.

Skwarla, 69, of Scott, died on March 12.

A graduate of Duquesne University's School of Education, Skwarla was a music teacher and band director at several public schools in the Pittsburgh area.

He also graduated from the Duquesne University School of Law and maintained a private practice while also working with the Allegheny County Public Defender's Office.

According to his obituary, he also founded the Algo Latino Big Band and most recently was a band director for Swinging Bobcats Big Band.
