WASHINGTON, D.C. — The special committee probing the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection wants to meet with U.S. Rep. Scott Perry regarding his involvement in discussions about replacing the attorney general with a lawyer promoting claims the presidential election was stolen.

Perry, a Pennsylvania Republican who represents the state's 1oth Congressional District, did not immediately say whether he would comply with the request.

U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson, the Mississippi Democrat who chairs the panel, sent a letter to Perry Monday asking him to appear before the committee by early January. Thompson said multiple witnesses have said Perry was heavily involved in attempts to promote Justice Department lawyer Jeffrey Clark to attorney general.

Clark was among those falsely claiming election fraud and wanted to use the Justice Department to overturn election results in Georgia.

"We are aware that you had multiple text and other communications with President Trump’s former chief of staff (Mark Meadows) regarding Mr. Clark," Thompson wrote. "We also have evidence indicating that in that time frame you sent communications to the former chief of staff using the encrypted Signal app."

According to a New York Times report, Perry introduced Clark to former President Donald Trump.

Perry is the first sitting member of Congress asked to appear before the committee. He has been a U.S. representative since 2013 and his district includes Dauphin, Cumberland and York counties.
