Pirates Hire Former World Series Winner As New General Manager

Ben Cherington has something on his resume that the previous six Pirates GMs did not - a World Series championship.

PITTSBURGH, PA - The Pittsburgh Pirates have hired Ben Cherington as their new general manager, according to multiple reports and first reported by the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. Cherington, the Toronto Blue Jays vice president of baseball operations, is expected to be formally introduced at a news conference on Monday.

He succeeds Neal Huntington, who was fired last month after 12 years on the job.

Cherington was general manager of the Boston Red Sox for four seasons from 2012 through 2015. His teams finished in last place in three of those seasons - 2012, 2014 and 2015 - but the Red Sox won the World Series in 2013.
