Pittsburgh Air Quality Remains Awful; Tips Here To Minimize Impact

PITTSBURGH, PA — Frightful air conditions will remain in place for Western Pennsylvania through Thursday. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has issued a
Code Red Air Quality Alert for fine particulates until midnight.
A code RED air quality alert means that air pollution concentrations within the local region are unhealthful for the general population. The effects of air pollution can be minimized by avoiding outdoor exercise or strenuous activity.
On a Code Red Air Quality Action Day, young children, the elderly, and those with respiratory problems, such as asthma, emphysema, and bronchitis, are especially vulnerable to the
effects of air pollution and should avoid outdoor activities, and all others should reduce prolonged and heavy exertion.

As of Thursday morning, the region's Air Quality Index was at 238, which is staggeringly unhealthy. Healthy levels are below 100.
