Pittsburgh Councilwoman Darlene Harris Ousted In Primary

PITTSBURGH, PA - Veteran Pittsburgh Councilwoman Darlene Harris was defeated in the Democratic primary Tuesday, but Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala had little difficulty fending off his primary opponent.

Darlene Harris, who has represented District 1 since 2007, lost to University of Pittsburgh researcher Bobby Wilson. With 93 percent of precincts reporting, Wilson had 2,392 votes to Harris' 1,321. Former Pittsburgh Public Schools board member Mark Brently Jr. was third with 427 votes.

District 1 includes the North Side communities of Brighton Heights, Marshall-Shadeland, Spring Hill, Spring Garden, Troy Hill, Deutschtown and Allegheny West.

In District 3, council President Bruce Kraus was victorious over two challengers. With 96 percent of precincts reporting, Kraus had 1,321 votes to Kenneth Wolfe's 854. Wolfe is a former Kraus staffer. University of Pittsburgh student Chris Kumanchik finished third with 277 votes.

In District 7, councilwoman Deb Gross was renominated. With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Gross had 3,449 votes to Highmark Health employee Deidre Kane's 2,419.

Allegheny County

Longtime incumbent Stephen Zappala staved off his first challenger in 20 years by defeating Turahn Jenkins, the former chief deputy director in the public defender's office. With 93 percent of the vote in, Zappala had 358,902 votes to Jenkins' 41,904.

County Executive Rich Fitzgerald was unopposed for the Democratic executive nomination and will face Republican Matt Drozd, a former county councilman who was unopposed for the Republican nomination.

Pittsburgh Public Schools

New school directors will be elected this year in districts 2, 4 and 6.

In the District 2 race for the Democratic nomination, Devin Taliaferro won the Democratic race while Kirk Rhys clinched the Republican nomination as he was the only candidate. In District 4, Pam Harbin defeated Anna Batista for both the Democratic and Republican nominations. In District 6, William Gallagher beat Heather Fulton for both the Democratic and Republican nominations.
