Pittsburgh-Area Grocery Store Hit With Consumer Alert

CORAOPOLIS, PA — The Allegheny County Health Department has issued a consumer alert for the Coraopolis Cash Market on Fourth Avenue.

The health department shut down the grocery store's meat department during a Tuesday inspection after finding the prep table, meat grinder, shelving, slicer, and walls and floors soiled with old food debris. In the walk-in cooler, meat, shelving and floors were heavily soiled with old food debris.

In the meat department customer display areas, black mold was found in the dairy display, juice display and meat display cases. Water was leaking from the walk-in cooler holding deli products. Mold was found on the floor.

Six blocks of cheese were found in the meat department cooler with June 2023 expiration dates. Pickle loaf was found swollen in packaging in the cooler.

The ceiling of the room housing the dairy storage cooler and walk-in freezer is mostly missing and covered with foil.

Fruit flies were observed resting on clean cutting boards by the prep sink. Numerous large flies and fruit flies observed throughout the back of the store.

Several moldy, spoiled heads of cauliflower were available for sale, as were several oxidized chunks of salami in partially opened packaging.

A restaurant with a consumer alert placard is allowed to operate for a temporary period not exceeding 10 days. Another inspection is conducted either prior to the expiration of the temporary period upon request of the eatery owner or on the tenth day.
