Pittsburgh-Area Man Among Dayton Mass Shooting Victims

Nicholas Cumer was among the nine people shot to death in the Ohio rampage early Sunday.

PITTSBURGH, PA - A Pittsburgh-area man was among the nine people who died early Sunday in the mass shooting in Dayton, Ohio. Nicholas Cumer, 25, was a 2012 graduate of Washington High School in Washington.

Cumer was a graduate and a graduate student student in the master of cancer care program at St. Francis College in Loretto, where he obtained a degree in exercise physiology. He had been in Dayton as part of his internship program with the Maple Tree Cancer Alliance.

The Rev. Malachi Van Tassell, St. Francis president, said that Cumer was recognized at the university's recent Community Engagement Awards for completing 100-plus hours of community service. He also was a graduate assistant with the university marching band.

"Nicholas was dedicated to caring for others," Van Tassel said. "We join the nation in mourning Nicholas, along side all of the victims of this tragedy."

Cumer also was a member of the Alpha Phi Delta fraternity.

The mass shooting occurred in Dayton's entertainment district shortly around 1 a.m. Sunday. In addition to the nine fatalities, 27 people were wounded.

The shooter, Connor Betts, 24, was killed by police less than a minute after the rampage began.
