Pittsburgh-Area Man Sentenced For Near-Fatal Beating

A Pittsburgh-area man was sentenced for the brutal beating of another man in a VFW last year.

BEAVER COUNTY, PA — Brett Ours savagely beat another man in an Aliquippa VFW last year. He won't have the possibility of doing that to anyone for decades.

Beaver County Common Pleas Court Judge Kim Tesla has sentenced Ours to up to 32 years in prison after he was found guilty in January of two counts of aggravated assault, three counts of simple assault, one count of strangulation and one count of possessing an instrument of crime.

In January 2025, Ours, 39, launched an unprovoked attack on Preston Coleman at the Penn Avenue VFW bar. Coleman is still recovering from his injuries.

Police said earlier that while Coleman was being attacked, he was mostly unconscious and defenseless. Ours used a bar stool to assault and strangle the victim, police said. During the attack, Ours took breaks before going back and additionally attacking and strangling the victim.

No one in the bar called police until after Ours departed. Coleman had to be life-flighted to an area hospital.
