Pittsburgh-Area Pizzeria Slapped With Consumer Alert

Here's why patrons of a Pittsburgh-area pizza place should be concerned.

PITTSBURGH, PA — The Allegheny County Health Department has issued a consumer alert for Casey's Pizza in Turtle Creek.

Numerous health code violations were found during an inspection on Tuesday.

Foods were found to be being stored at unsafe temperatures. Many products were found in a non-operational cooler.

Foods that had to be discarded included American cheese, cooked pasta, ricotta cheese, raw sausage, anchovies, cooked steak, sliced ham, meatballs, sausage, pizza sauce, salami and cooked wings.

There's more. Employees were observed failing to wash their hands after handling payment at the register and then returning to food preparations.

Additionally, a worker was observed to have barehand contact with mozzarella cheese as it was was being shred. The inspector confirmed with employees that the cheese goes on cooked foods and salads.

Also, food contact surfaces of the deli slicer were soiled with debris.

A restaurant with a consumer alert placard is allowed to operate for a temporary period not exceeding 10 days. Another inspection is conducted either prior to the expiration of the temporary period upon request of the eatery owner or on the tenth day.
