Pittsburgh Kennywood Amusement Park Altercation Leaves 3 People Shot

Three people were shot Saturday evening at Kennywood Park after a dispute between two groups of young men, police said.

WEST MIFFLIN, PA — Three people were shot Saturday night at Kennywood, a family-oriented amusement park near Pittsburgh. All will survive, Allegheny County police said.

The shooting occurred at 10:50 p.m. during the park's Phantom Fall Fest, near the Musik Express ride. An undetermined number of people suffered trampling injuries as terrified people attempted to flee the shooting scene.

The shooting happened during an altercation between two groups of young men, according to county police Superintendent Christopher Kearns.

The shooter was described as a Black male wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and a dark-colored COVID-19 mask.

A handgun was discovered near the shooting scene. How a gun got into the park is unclear, as people entering the park are required to pass through metal detectors.

Kearns said police will review park surveillance video during their investigation. He said anyone with information about the shootings should call the county police tip line at 833-255-8477; callers can remain anonymous.

Kennywood's initial response to the shooting was released on social media.

"The safety of our guests and team members are our top priority," Kennywood said in a post on Twitter. "Members of the park's security, Allegheny County, and West Mifflin police departments were already on site and immediately responded."

The amusement park will be closed Sunday but will reopen Sept. 30.
