Pittsburgh Marine Veteran Turns VA Benefits Fight Into Mission to Help Others

Pittsburgh veteran Jessica King is being recognized through the Veterans of Foreign Wars Still Serving – www.todaysvfw.org -- initiative that honors veterans who continue strengthening their communities after their military service ends.
Marine Corps veteran King knows firsthand how difficult it can be to access earned VA benefits. After spending nearly a decade fighting her own claim, a VFW claims consultant helped her finally get what she was owed.
That experience inspired King to become a VFW-accredited service officer in 2022. Today, she manages and trains about 35 service officers, helping veterans and surviving family members navigate the VA system.

“I wanted to fight for veterans like she did for me,” King said. Her team has helped secure retroactive compensation, emergency housing assistance and other life-changing benefitsl at no cost to veterans.
King’s team has helped veterans secure retroactive compensation and emergency financial assistance, including rent support for a veteran experiencing homelessness – proof that VFW service officers continue to change lives long after the uniform comes off.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) launched Still Serving, a campaign to highlight how America’s combat veterans continue to serve in their local communities after transitioning from the military, in March 2020. What started as a campaign became a movement as veterans across the country stepped up to share stories of how they are still serving. In 2022, it launched an outgrowth of the Still Serving initiative, VFW Day of Service – an annual dedicated day of community service projects led by veterans throughout the world.
