Pittsburgh Native Was Victim In Youngstown Fatal Bank Blast

A Pittsburgh-area native has been identified as the person killed in a fatal Ohio bank explosion on Tuesday.

PENN HILLS, PA — The one fatality in the explosion at a bank in Youngstown, OH on Tuesday was a Pittsburgh native and Penn Hills High School graduate.

The Mahoning County Coroner's Office on Wednesday identified the man killed in the blast as Akil Drake, 27. Drake was a member of the football team while he was a Penn Hills student and graduated in 2015.

Drake then attended Youngstown State University, graduating in 2019 with a degree in finance.

Drake was working at the Chase bank in Youngstown's Realty Building on East Federal Street when the explosion occurred shortly before 3 p.m. on Tuesday. His body was recovered from the rubble on Tuesday night.

Seven people were injured in the blast. One woman remains in critical condition and is on a ventilator at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, but the remaining victims appear to be doing well enough to be released soon, The Vindicator of Youngstown reported on Thursday.

At a news conference in Youngstown on Wednesday, authorities said the explosion's cause remains unknown and the Mahoning County Fire Marshal's Office continues to investigate the incident.
