Pittsburgh Police To Boost Downtown Presence
Pittsburgh police say they are increasing manpower and visibility in the city's Central Business District.
PITTSBURGH, PA — Following what public safety officials are describing as "a recent uptick" in crime and disorderly activity Downtown, the city will embark on a high-visibility police patrol initiative in the Central Business District.
The plan, announced Monday, entails having officers receive additional support from K-9, cycle unit and violence prevention unit officers who will concentrate on specific areas as identified by police supervisors.
Additionally, a police vehicle will patrol Downtown nightly with its overhead red and blue lights activated at all times but not in flashing mode. According to officials, this strategy has helped to deter crime in other cities and provides quick identification of police vehicles in an emergency or when an officer is needed.

A specific date for the initiative to begin was not announced, but officials said it will be "implemented in the coming weeks."
