Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Affiliate Acquires City Paper

The Post-Gazette has purchased Pittsburgh's sole alternative and entertainment news weekly.

PITTSBURGH, PA — A subsidiary of Pittsburgh Post-Gazette owner Block Communications has purchased the Pittsburgh City Paper.

Cars Holding, Inc. will acquire the alternative news weekly from Eagle Media, the publisher of the Butler Eagle, which has operated the weekly tabloid paper and digital site since 2016. The closing will take place this month; terms were not disclosed.

In a release, Block said all City Paper employees will be retained and the paper will operate autonomously from the Post-Gazette.

“We believe in the need for independent journalism and are happy to further our commitment to the city of Pittsburgh and, specifically, to support this well-established entertainment and
alternative news publication," Allan Block, chairman and chief executive officer of Block Communications, said in a news release.

Block Communications also owns The Blade of Toledo and several TV stations.
