Pittsburgh Public Schools Teachers Strike Averted

The district and teachers reached a tentative contract agreement late Tuesday.

PITTSBURGH, PA - Pittsburgh Public Schools teachers won’t go on strike as planned Friday, as the district and the union reached a tentative agreement late Tuesday on a new contract.

Details of the new labor agreement between the district and the Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers are not expected to be released until both sides ratify the pact. Although that process could take several weeks, teachers will remain on the job during that time.

The union on Monday notified the district that it intended to strike, as it was required to do under state law. It would have been the first teachers’ strike in the city school system in more than 40 years and the work stoppage would have impacted 24,000 students.
