Pittsburgh Public Schools Detail Reopening Plans

The district plans to delay the start of the school year amid the coronavirus outbreak.

PITTSBURGH, PA — Pittsburgh Public Schools will delay the start of the school year from August 26 to Aug. 31 under a preliminary reopening plan unveiled Tuesday. The delay would permit teacher development days as they prepare for the 2020-21 school year amid the coronavirus outbreak

Other aspects of the plan:

  • Families can select full-time E-learning or a combination of E-learning and in-school education. Thus far, about 700 students have enrolled in full-time E-Learning.
  • An AA/BB schedule for in-school instruction to limit the number of students in the building at any one time. This would mean students in one cohort may attend school Monday and Tuesday and participating in E-Learning on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, while some students attend school on Thursday and Friday and have E-Learning on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. AA/BB is preferred over AB/AB to support in-depth cleaning requirements between cohorts.
  • All students and staff wear masks all day and practice social distancing. While on a school bus, students sit one to a seat.
  • All intruction at the Gifted Center will be virtual.
  • The district will switch to Schoology as its online learning management system and will use Microsoft Teams as well.
