Golly Bejabbers, Lads! Pittsburgh Holding St. Patrick's Day Parade In September

Irish eyes will be smiling Saturday when the parade, which hasn't been held since 2019, finally occurs despite the lingering pandemic.

PITTSBURGH, PA — September is the month when leaves begin to turn, the college and NFL seasons begin and pumpkin spice products are unavoidable on the shelves. It's not the month when Pittsburgh typically holds its annual St. Patrick's Day Parade.

But the last 18 months have been anything but typical thanks to the coronavirus outbreak. So in atypical fashion and after the event was canceled in 2020 and again this past March, the city's St. Patrick's Day Parade will be held Saturday.

Pittsburgh has one of the nation's most popular St. Patrick's Day parades, usually with more than 20,000 participants and more than 250,000 spectators lining the Downtown parade route. How many people will turn out to watch this odd September affair is unknown given that every county in the state currently has high community transmission rates of COVID-19, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Those transmission rates forced organizers of the city's Labor Day Parade to cancel the event that had been scheduled for September 6.

The parade will begin at the intersection of Liberty and 11th streets, then proceed on Grant Street to the Boulevard of the Allies. The procession then will turn right and continue onto the Boulevard of the Allies to the reviewing stand at Stanwix Street before disbursing at Commonwealth Place.
