Pittsburgh Under Winter Storm Watch; Snow, Ice Could Be Coming

PITTSBURGH, PA — The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for Pittsburgh and most counties in western Pennsylvania. The watch is in effect from 1 a.m. Thursday until 10 a.m. Friday.

Heavy mixed precipitation is possible. The weather service is calling for total snow and sleet accumulations between 3 and 6 inches, and ice accumulations between one tenth and three tenths of an inch.

Power outages and tree damage are likely due to the ice. Travel could be nearly impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday morning and evening commutes.

The mixed precipitation, combined with ice jams in area rivers could cause flooding Thursday through Friday, according to the weather service.

As of Monday, Pittsburgh still officially had 7 inches of snow depth on the ground at the weather service office in Moon. That makes a week with more than half a foot of snow on the ground.
