Pittsburgh Writer Unveiling Art Deco Architecture Book
A Pittsburgh writer and Philadelphia artist have teamed for a unique coffee-table book on the nation's Art Deco structures.

PITTSBURGH, PA — Distinctive architecture might not be as popular as the Taylor Swift-Travis Kelce romance, but that doesn't mean it should be ignored.
That attitude is reflected in the work of Pittsburgh writer Mark House and Philadelphia artist Chris Hytha, who have collaborated on the new book "Highrises Art Deco." The coffee table tome features some of the nation's most impressive Art Deco skyscrapers - 100 of them in 49 cities.
"It's a topic that is really inspiring, interesting," Houser told Patch. "It moves me."

Houser is a former reporter who gives rooftop tours of Pittsburgh’s antique skyscrapers each summer and fall. Hytha is a designer, photographer and visual artist with a degree in architecture from Drexel University.
Their cross-country odyssey involved Hytha taking drone images of the buildings in the books that creates unique renderings resembling an orthographic. Drawing on research that included vintage newspaper coverage, Houser wrote profiles of the buildings that include height, number of stories, architect and the year of completion.

"When you know the story behind the buildings, that enhances their appeal," Houser said.
The book launch will occur Feb. 22 at Ollie's Gastropub on the top floor of Pittsburgh's historic Oliver Building. Houser and Hytha will give a presentation about how they started this ambitious art and history project to showcase these underappreciated gems.
Signed books and prints featuring Pittsburgh historic skyscrapers will be available. Ticket sales for the event will benefit the Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation.
