PITTSBURGH, PA — George Ferris designed the first Ferris wheel for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. He did so from his house on Arch Street on Pittsburgh’s North Side.

More than 130 years later, plans are proceeding for a large Ferris wheel in Pittsburgh's Manchester neighborhood - as well as a skating rink, splash park and housing.

Plans for the Piatt Cos $475 million The Esplenade project were disclosed this week during an online meeting of the Manchester Citizens Corporation.

Construction on the project, about 15 acres in size near the Rivers Casino and West End Bridge, could begin as soon as this fall, Piatt Cos officials said during the meeting.

The Ferris wheel is expect to be built on the portion of the site closest to Downtown, atop a building that will house shops, eateries and retail space.
