Pittsburgh-Area Doughnut Empire Ends After Nearly 8 Decades

The last location of a Pittsburgh-area doughnut shop empire has gone out of business following the recent death of its owner.

ROCHESTER, PA —DeAngelis Donuts, which satisfied people's sweet tooth in several different Beaver County locations for the past 77 years, served its final doughnut on Sunday.

The Rochester shop, the last location that was open, has closed after the death Thursday of owner Dick DeAngelis, 68, of Patterson Township.

According to the shop's website, DeAngelis Donuts opened in 1947 in Beaver Falls under the ownership of Joseph's DeAngelis, Dick's father.

In 1975, Richard and his brother, Thomas DeAngelis, opened DeAngelis Brothers Inc. in Rochester. The siblings operated both shops after Joseph DeAngelis died under the name DeAngelis Donuts. In 1985, a Chippewa location opened.

Following the retirement of Thomas DeAngelis in 2003, Richard DeAngelis ran the family business on his own. The Beaver Falls location closed in 2003 and the Chippewa shop went out of business in 2013, leaving only the Rochester in operation.
