Punxsutawney Phil's Prediction Likely To Disappoint

The groundhog makes his annual forecast Saturday.

The good news for people in western Pennsylvania is the weekend will bring sunny skies and warmer temperatures. The bad news for people nationwide is that the sunshine likely will cause the state’s most famous rodent to predict six more weeks of winter.

Saturday is Groundhog Day, the one day out of the year where the country’s attention is focused on Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney PA, about two hours northeast of Pittsburgh. At around 7:25 a.m., Punxsutawney Phil will offer his forecast for the rest of winter despite possessing no meteorology degree.

Most Pennsylvanians are weary of winter after this week’s polar vortex punch this that pummeled the state with snow and frigid temperatures, so they likely won’t be happy with Phil’s probable prediction. Out of the 132 previous times Phil issued a forecast, records exist for 122 predictions.

The good news, however, is this: no matter what the rodent predicts, spring officially arrives in less than seven weeks.
