Roberto Clemente's 3,000th Hit To Be Recognized On 50th Anniversary
The late Pirates star, who died while attempting a humanitarian effort, will be remembered by Pittsburgh and Allegheny County officials.

PITTSBURGH, PA — The 50th anniversary of Roberto Clemente's 3,000th - and last - major league hit will be recognized Friday by Pittsburgh and Allegheny County officials.
Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald and Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey have each have proclaimed the day “Roberto Clemente Day” to celebrate Clemente’s life as a veteran, humanitarian and Hall of Fame baseball player.
The event will include remarks and remembrances, the unveiling of the Three Rivers Stadium home plate marker, and the playing of the 3,000th hit call by the late Pirates broadcaster Bob Prince.

On September 30, 1972, Clemente hit a double in the fourth inning off of Jon Matlack for his 3,000th hit.
Clemente died in a plane crash on December 31, 1972, while attempting to bring supplies to
survivors of an earthquake in Nicaragua. He was elected to the baseball Hall of Fame in 1973.
