Sandcastle Getting Multimillion-Dollar Makeover: First Look
Here's a sneak preview of the renovations you'll see this year at Pittsburgh's Sandcastle water park.
WEST HOMESTEAD, PA — Sandcastle hopes to make a splash with patrons in 2022. In addition to the previously announced new attraction Bombs Away, the water park is getting a multimillion-dollar renovation.
Palace Entertainment, which also owns Kennywood in West Mifflin and Idlewild in Ligonier, announced the upgrade Friday.
Among the many improvements:

- The Mon Tsunami wave pool will receive a new stone facade and a waterfall that will operate during wave sequences.
- The Mushroom Pool is getting a painted mural along its back wall.
- The water slides are being repainted with a new color palette.
- New Adirondack seating is being added.
- The Boardwalk is getting a new steel archway with illuminated lettering and new lighting.
- An all-new sandbox is being added off of the boardwalk.
- Cocomo Joe's and Sandbar, the park's two walk-up bars, are being refreshed to inspire more of a beach vibe.
The park also is adding new food options, renovating its parking booths and adding landscaping improvements.
Previously announced was the new water attraction Bombs Away, a 305-foot-long free falling attraction. Sliders will step into an enclosed capsule whose floor will abruptly vanish and drop them trough a closed-tube fly-by down six stores at speeds as high as 26 feet per second.

Bombs Away will be located adjacent to the Lightning Express speed slide. Spectators will be able to see riders taking the plunge through the ride's translucent orange, blue and white layout.
