2 More Sears, 1 Kmart Store Closing In Pittsburgh Area

They are among 63 Sears and Kmart stores being shuttered nationwide.

PITTSBURGH, PA - The Sears department stores in South Hills Village and Robinson Town Center, and the Kmart in Latrobe are among 63 stores nationwide the company announced Thursday it is shuttering.

The closures will leave the Pittsburgh metro area without a Sears store and will leave southwestern Pennsylvania with only two remaining, in Washington Crown Center in Washington and Westmoreland Mall in Greensburg.

The struggling company initially announced plans Thursday to close 72 stores, but released a list of only 63 stores slated for closing - 48 Sears stores and 15 Kmart stores across 29 states. The company said the nine additional stores that it initially planned to announce would close will be evaluated further.

Sears and Kmart had a total of 3,500 stores across the country when they merged in 2005. The closure of these latest 63 stores will leave the chains with a total of 831.

Sears has shuttered five western Pennsylvania locations in recent years: Wilkins in 2013, Century II Mall in 2014, Pittsburgh Mills in 2015, Clearview Mall in 2016 and Ross Park Mall this year. Those locations remain vacant, although Ross Park Mall plans to start construction in January on a transformation of the Sears space into new retail and dining space.
