Several Pittsburgh Universities Rank Among World's Best: U.S. News

PITTSBURGH, PA — Three Pittsburgh universities were among nine Pennsylvania institutions of higher education named among the best universities in the world, according to U.S. News and World Report.

The new ranking features more than 2,000 schools in dozens of countries. Schools were included based on academic research, reputation, number of publications and books, conferences, impact of citations from studies, and other factors.

The Pittsburgh universities that made the cut and their global ranking number:

• University of Pittsburgh: 45.

• Carnegie Mellon University: 118.

• Duquesne University: 1,758

Other Pennsylvania school that made the U.S. News list and their global ranking: University of Pennsylvania (15); Pennsylvania State University (84); Temple University (309); Drexel University (352); Jefferson University (405); Lehigh University (917) and Villanova University (966).

"The Best Global Universities rankings offer prospective students a valuable resource for exploring higher education options outside of their home country," Robert Morse, chief data strategist at U.S. News, said in a news release.

"Over the past nine years, these rankings have expanded to include more schools and more subjects, while maintaining a consistent focus on institutions that prioritize academic research."

This year’s list ranked an additional 250 schools, up from 1,750 last year.

To determine which schools make the list, U.S. News analyzes data and metrics provided by global analytics company Clarivate, including student-to-faculty ratio and number of degrees awarded. Researchers also used 13 separate ranking factors and focused on each institution’s research performance.
