Severe Storms, Tornadoes Threat Returning To Pittsburgh

The National Weather Service is warning of the potential for severe weather in Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania.

PITTSBURGH, PA — After a relatively tranquil week weather-wise, the risk of severe storms and the potential for tornadoes once again is returning to the Pittsburgh area.

The National Weather Service says that showers and thunderstorms could become strong to severe late tonight and into early Friday morning. All hazards will be possible, including damaging straight line winds, large hail and tornadoes.

The weather service is warning that a few storms could be significant, with wind gusts of at least 75 mph, hail at least two inches in diameter and potential of at least an EF2 tornado. An EF2 carries wind speeds of between 113 mph and 157 mph and is capable of causing widespread destruction.

The most likely arrival time for these storms in the Pittsburgh area is 2 a.m.

Showers and thunderstorms will develop again late Friday into early Saturday. The weather service says that these storms also could be severe.
