Significant Traffic Trouble Coming For Major Pittsburgh Bridge

PITTSBURGH, PA —Prepare for major delays on and around a heavily traveled city bridge.

The Allegheny County Department of Public Works announced Tuesday that the four-lane Glenwood Bridge will be reduced to two lanes – one in each direction – beginning March 4. The restrictions will be in place until October.

The restrictions are required for $4.4 million in bridge preservation work, including steel, deck, sidewalk and drainage work. At some point during the project, the northbound ramp from Route 837 to the Glenwood Bridge will fully close for about a month.

The exact start date for that closure has yet to be determined.>

The Glenwood Bridge carries state-owned Route 885 over the Monongahela River between the Hazelwood and Hays neighborhoods. It carries an average of 19,030 vehicles daily.

The span has a bridge condition rating of 5 (fair condition) on a 0-9 scale based on National Bridge Inspection Standards established by the Federal Highway Administration.
