Significant Winter Storm Heading For Pittsburgh

Forecasters are warning of potentially significant snowfall in Pittsburgh and southwestern Pennsylvania this weekend.

PITTSBURGH, PA — Prepare for messy weather, Pittsburgh. A large winter storm is on its way from the Midwest and likely will impact southwestern Pennsylvania, with one forecast predicting as many as seven inches of snow.

The National Weather Service predicts the storm will affect the region Saturday night through early next week with mixed precipitation followed by rounds of lake enhanced snow showers. There's a 70 percent chance of snow Saturday night, an 80 percent chance on Sunday and a 70 percent chance on Sunday night and Monday.

The weather service says it's too soon to predict how much snow will accumulate but is advising people to pay close attention to forecasts over the weekend.

Two other forecasting services are predicting potentially significant snowfall.

The Weather Channel says Saturday night's snowfall will be around an inch, with one to three inches each on Sunday and Monday for a total potential accumulation of seven inches.

State College-based AccuWeather says Pittsburgh could see three to six inches from Saturday night to Tuesday, while areas north and east of the city could get six to 12 inches.

According to AccuWeather, cities such as Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, Boston and Washington D.C. also should be preparing for the wintry blast.
