Steelers Decide On New Head Coach: Reports

The Steelers have selected their new head coach, according to multiple reports. You might be surprised at the choice.

PITTSBURGH, PA — The Steelers' search for a successor to former coach Mike Tomlin has ended, according to multiple reports.

ESPN's Adam Schefter and the NFL Network's Tom Pelissero both reported Saturday that the team plans to hire former Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy. The story has a decidedly local angle as McCarthy is a native of Pittsburgh's Greenfield neighborhood.

The Steelers have not formally announced the move, and a contract is not believed to have been finalized yet.

Tomlin resigned earlier this month after 19 seasons with the team.

McCarthy, 62, won a Super Bowl title with the Packers in 2011 as his team beat the Steelers. He has made the playoffs in 12 of his 18 seasons as an NFL head coach, has won eight division titles and has an 11-11 record in the playoffs.

McCarthy's selection likely increases the odds of Aaron Rodgers returning to play quarterback for the Steelers in 2026. McCarthy coached Rodgers in Green Bay and won the Super Bowl with him against the Steelers.
