Steelers, Eagles Fan Bases Rank Among NFL's Best: Study

Find out here where the Steelers and Eagles ranked in the new Emory University study.

When it comes to having rabid NFL fan bases, no state can top Pennsylvania, a new study by Emory University professor Michael Lewis has concluded. The Eagles and Steelers both rank in the top five.

The top five fan bases, or team brands, are the Dallas Cowboys, New England Patriots, Eagles, New York Giants and Steelers.

To determine the rankings, Lewis measured three areas of fan engagement: fan equity, social equity and road equity. Fan equity focuses on home box office revenues (support via opening the wallet); social media equity focuses on fan willingness to engage as part of a team’s community
(support exhibited by joining social media communities); road equity focuses on how teams draw on the road after adjusting for team performance.

According to Lewis, these metrics provide a balanced analyses of fandom – a measure of willingness to spend, a measure unconstrained by stadium size and a measure of national appeal.

The Eagles finished 12th in fan equity, fourth in social equity and first in road equity. The Steelers finished 16th in fan equity, second in social equity and sixth in road equity.

"The strong social and road scores keep the Eagles near the top," Lewis said. "The Steelers could probably be a bit higher on the list. The Steelers tend to price near the middle of the league and this limits their fan equity score."
