Steelers Training Camp: Five Things You Need To Know

PITTSBURGH, PA - Are you ready for some football? The Steelers report to St. Vincent College in Latrobe on July 27 to prepare for the long regular season ahead that won’t conclude until they play the Cleveland Browns on New Year’s Eve.

Steelers training camp normally attracts throngs of fans looking to get a glimpse or an autograph of their favorites players in the rustic setting of the rural campus. Here are five things you should know about camp:

• There’s much more to do at St. Vincent than watch the team practice.

Numerous Steelers Experience activities will take place daily from noon-6 p.m. Fans can visit the Steelers merchandise tent; spin a wheel for the chance to win prizes at the Steelers Nation Unite tent; visit the 53-foot trailer version of the FedEx Great Hall at Heinz Field; have their photo taken against the backdrop of some of their favorite Steelers scenes; capture memorable photos with a gigantic Steelers hypocycloid or in a replica locker room; compare their sizes to those of Steelers players in the “How Do You Stack Up?” display and practice their football skills with quarterback toss and field goal kicking elements.

• Parking at St. Vincent isn’t a problem.

Parking is free to all fans and located in the fields adjacent to the camp entrance. Handicapped parking is available near the entrance, just-see a parking lot attendant upon arrival. The fields open for parking at noon on days when practice starts at 2:55 p.m.

• The Steelers will hold their annual evening practice at Latrobe Memorial Stadium on Aug. 4.

Tickets are $5 for adults 13-65 and $2 for children 5-12 and senior citizens. Children under 5 will be admitted for free if accompanied by a parent. All proceeds go to the Greater Latrobe Athletic Department. Gates open at 5 p.m. and practice starts at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN. A Steelers Fest in Latrobe will occur outside the stadium from noon to 6 p.m. and include autograph sessions with former Steelers Mike Logan and Louis Lipps, as well as the opportunity for fans to get their pictures taken with the team’s six Lombardi Trophies.

• For the first time, the Steelers will hold a training camp practice at Heinz Field.

Steelers Family Fest will take place on Sunday August 6th at Heinz Field from 5:00 p.m-9:00 p.m. Tickets are $10 for all fans. The event will include numerous kids activities, a viewing of the 2016 Steelers Highlight film on the new scoreboard and on field performances by the Steeline Drumline, Hell on Wheels BMX Stunt Show, and Bill Camp’s Famous Flying Dogs.

• There are days when you’ll be disappointed if you go to St. Vincent to watch the team practice.

They include dates when the Steelers are playing preseason games at the New York Giants (Aug. 11), home against the Atlanta Falcons (Aug. 20) and Indianapolis Colts (Aug. 26) and at the Carolina Panthers (Aug. 31). The complete training camp schedule can be found here.
