Thousands Of Migrating Birds To Fly Over Pittsburgh Area Monday

One of the largest migration events of the year will occur in southwestern Pennsylvania this evening.

PITTSBURGH, PA — More than 18,000 birds are expected to fly in the skies over Pittsburgh this evening in one of the largest migration events of the season. The migration is expected to begin in southwestern Pennsylvania around 7 p.m., leaving roughly an hour of daylight to witness it.

According to the Pennsylvania Natural Heritage Program, artificial lights can confuse birds and cause them to become disoriented or fly into buildings. To protect these migrating birds, the organization advises turning off as many outdoor lights as possible from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.
